Crohn's Disease and Glutathione Depletion


Glutathione (GSH) is the main antioxidant of intestinal epithelial cells and glutathione depletion is known to cause mucosal inflammation in the gut. Studies have shown that glutathione levels are depleted in patients with Crohn's disease due to the high amount of oxidative stress present in the inflamed gut.
The presence of oxidative stress is further demonstrated by the elevated level of the oxidised (or 'used up') form of the antioxidant (GSSG).
